I worked somewhere where there was a very attractive person. I would guess over 90% of men or more would find her very attractive. She would always just walk around the office and ask people how they're doing or say small things to them.
I always wondered if the real reason why she's doing that is to try to motivate the employees to work hard.

I come across videos, blogs, text books and Reddit posts on C language that are often wrong or deeply rooted in myths and misconceptions. This little post is an attempt at clarifying a few things so there's no more misunderstandings about primitive data types. Before I go any further, remember this one little thing:

The JTC1/SC22/WG14 peoples try everything in their power to not make assumptions about the underlying hardware or the system environment.
It is one of the core tenets of C programming language. See, char, short, int and long are not of fixed sizes and their size are not the same across compilers. If you dig into ISO C-89/ANSI standard, you'll notice they're all relative to each other and that char is derived on the definition of a Byte. In, ISO C-89 sec 1.6, byte itself is defined as:
the unit of data storage in the execution environment large enough to hold any member of the basic character set of the execution environment. It shall be possible to express the address of each individual byte of an object uniquely. A byte is composed of a contiguous sequence of bits, the number of which is implementation-defined. The least significant bit is called the low-order bit; the most significant bit is called the high-order bit.
As for the "basic character set", ISO C-89 sec 2.2.1 lists about 100 characters that in total needs at least 7 bits to represent. And if you scroll down a bit into numerical limits, the predefined macros, SCHAR_MIN and SCHAR_MAX must be at least be -127 and +127 respectively. So 7 bits for integer and 1 bit for sign, you get 8 bits -- the minimum required value for predefined macro CHAR_BIT. Now, most popular CPUs like Intel, ARM, MIPS, SPARC all have 8 bit bytes which is where the misconception that all bytes are exactly 8 bits comes from. That same numerical limits section enforces the relativity rule that short and intmust be at least 16 bits and long must at least be 32 bits. See? It's always "at least" and "minimum", not "exact".
Now, the sizeof operator returns the size of its argument in bytes. So if CHAR_BIT were 16, then sizeof(uint16_t) will be 1 because a 16 bit integer fits into a single byte.
So, is there ever a hardware where CHAR_BIT is greater than 8? Of course, yes! Off the top of my mind, Texas Instruments TMS320C28x in section J.3.4 says, "The number of bits in a byte (CHAR_BIT) is 16". SHARC's CrossCore Embedded Studio allows you to specify the size of char via CLI argument --char-size[-8|-32] to adjust CHAR_BIT. You can even mix and match to your liking!
If you're a beginner, and want to see some semblance of standards, use GCC or Clang with -std=c99 -Wpedantic -Werror on CLI. That way, you can include stdint.h and use size guaranteed data types like int_t and uint_t and don't have to think too much. But still, I urge you to know your hardware well.
I just watched a YouTube professor where he was interspersing commands to "like and subscribe to his channel" while telling me char is always 8 bits. There are plenty of these buffoons around who take a 30-minute online course on introduction to programming and think they know computer science. They write blogs, make tutorial videos, and some even go on to write books. I don't want to name names but you know who they are. Please spend some time reading the standards to appreciate why C is the way it is. It will certainly go a long way.
